Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a delivery service for journal articles, books, audiovisuals, and other materials. If you are too busy to photocopy materials or need items not available at Duke, this service can help you. The Duke University Medical Center Library's Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan service is available to DUMC faculty, staff, and students. Requests from users not affiliated with Duke University must be processed through our Loansome Doc System.

How do I use the service?

The Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan system may be accessed at http://illiad.mclibrary.duke.edu. Before you can submit requests, you must first complete a registration form via the Web with your name, address, and other personal information. It is only necessary to enter your personal information into the system once.

Requests for journal articles, books, audiovisuals and other materials may only be submitted electronically. Phone requests are limited to emergency patient care situations ONLY. Once you have connected to the system at http://illiad.mclibrary.duke.edu with your DHE AD username and password, you may choose the request type from the ILL Main Menu.

Instructions: When filling out request forms, please:

• Submit one form for each item requested
• Complete all required information
• Check Rush if you want faster delivery (additional $3.00 fee)

When and how will I get the materials?

The Library staff processes all requests Monday through Friday. If the materials are available on campus, we can usually retrieve them within 48 hours. Items located at off-campus libraries may take longer. Information about the status of your requests can be retrieved through the Web at any time and from any location. Requested books and audiovisuals will be held at the Library Service Desk for pickup. Articles will be delivered electronically.

Rush service (additional $3.00 fee) will attempt to provide the materials within 24 hours. To ensure that every request is handled quickly and efficiently, the Library may have to set limits on the number of rush requests per patron, per day.

Emergency patient care situations are treated with the highest priority, and services can usually be provided within 2 hours in these special situations.

If you submit a large number of requests (over 30) in one day, these requests may be processed over several days and the turnaround time may be longer.

Additional Fees

Rush: $3.00 per request

If charges apply, you will be invoiced at the end of the month. Payment may be made with a credit card, check, or cash. Duke departments and patrons may pay the bill with a credit card by faxing or mailing the invoice with the credit card information, which will be destroyed once the charge is made.

Purchasing articles directly from the publishers

If you need immediate electronic access to an article, you may be able to purchase it directly from the publisher. Connect to http://www.pubmed.gov and retrieve the article with the PMID (a unique identifier for each article in PubMed, usually found following a citation or abstract) or by using the Single Citation Matcher (which requires two or more pieces of information from the citation). Open the citation by clicking on the authors' names. If the article can be purchased directly from the publisher, a publisher's link will appear above the article title. Credit cards are required and fees vary by publisher, often ranging from $20 to $50 per article. Availability varies by publisher.
